About ScoPPES

Scoping the Professionalisation of Public Engagement with STEM is a short (4 month) project aiming to explore some sector-wide issues for the PE with STEM community and to consider the development needs of individuals working in this community.  ScoPPES aims to respond to the Wellcome Trust’s Informal Science Learning Review of 2012 which highlighted a number of shortcomings in the sector that limit its capacity to advance as quickly as could be expected from such a wellestablished field

In Wellcome’s response to the report Matterson and Holman called for a ‘self-learning community to further enhance, develop and deepen the sector: “We believe that it is essential for the community itself to develop its own sense of ‘profession’ that is valuable and appropriate to practitioners.” ScoPPES is an opportunity for us to consider exactly this prospect.

Over a period of four months, Helen Featherstone will undertake a programme of dialogue with representatives from the community of PE providers across the South West of England (BANES, Bristol, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall). This will be an iterative process where ideas are tested and developed through the conversations to inform the development of a regional programme of work. Participants will be invited to recommend others for inclusion. This blog has been set up to document progress and facilitate ongoing dialogue.
